What to Expect on the Day
Cremations, Burials & Direct Cremation
At Saunders & Chorley Funeral Directors, we believe in providing families with clear guidance and compassion during the difficult time of saying goodbye to a loved one. Whether you’ve chosen a cremation, burial, or direct cremation, we are here to ensure that the day is handled with respect, dignity, and care.

Cremation Service
If you have chosen a traditional cremation service, here’s what you can expect on the day:
Arrival at the Crematorium
Our team will ensure your loved one is transported respectfully to the crematorium. The immediate family will have the opportunity to pay their respects before the cremation, should you wish to have a short private moment.
The Service
A funeral service may be held before the cremation at the crematorium chapel, led by a celebrant or religious leader, as per your wishes. You can personalise the service with music, readings, or eulogies.
Procession
Following the service, the coffin will be transported to the cremation chamber. You can choose to have family or friends participate in a short farewell at this point.
Post-Cremation
After the cremation, your loved one’s ashes will be ready for return within 5-7 working days. You may choose to keep them in an urn, scatter them, or inter them, as per their wishes.
Burial Service
A burial is a more traditional option, and here’s what you can expect:

Upon arrival, you will be guided to the site of the burial. If it’s a churchyard or a private cemetery, we will ensure that you have time to gather and reflect before the service begins.

A formal service will take place, led by a religious or non-religious officiant. You will have the opportunity to personalise the service with music, readings, or tributes.

After the service, the coffin will be lowered into the grave. Loved ones can place flowers, personal items, or soil on the coffin to symbolise their farewell.

A memorial headstone or plaque can be arranged at a later date, providing a lasting tribute to your loved one.

Direct Cremation
Direct cremation is a simple and affordable option for families who prefer a straightforward approach without the need for a formal service at the crematorium. Here’s what to expect on the day:
Arrival at the Crematorium
Your loved one will be brought to the crematorium in a respectful manner, and the process will be handled privately without any formal ceremony. However, you will have the option to receive a video of your loved one arriving at the crematorium, which can be shared with family and friends as a personal, respectful farewell.
Unattended Cremation
Unlike a traditional cremation, there will be no service or attendees present at the crematorium. However, we offer a respectful cremation process, and the family will receive the ashes within 5-7 working days in a simple urn or casket.
Memorial Options
Following the cremation, you can choose to hold a memorial service at a later date or scatter your loved one’s ashes in a meaningful location. You will have the flexibility to plan this service as it fits best for you and your family.
Complimentary Video of Loved One’s Arrival at the Crematorium
For families opting for a direct cremation or any of our services, we offer a complimentary video recording of your loved one’s arrival at the crematorium. This personal video can be shared with family and friends as a respectful way to mark the journey, offering a sense of closure for those who may not be able to attend in person.
